Facing Cases and Death Threats, Bandarban AL Leader Mohiuddin Goes into Hiding
Questions have been raised over the whereabouts of Md. Mohiuddin, a former influential member of the Bandarban district unit of the Awami League, as local BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists have called for his arrest.
Mohiuddin, a resident of Banarupa in Ward No. 6 of Bandarban town, had long been active in Awami League politics. Local political sources say he was considered close to former State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing and had considerable influence in the district during the previous Awami League-led government.
According to his political opponents, Mohiuddin is still staying in Bandarban and moving around despite having two cases filed against him. They have also accused him of continuing activities associated with the banned organisation. However, these allegations could not be independently verified.
Local BNP activists have expressed dissatisfaction over his alleged presence in the area. They claimed that on several occasions, BNP and Jamaat activists went to his residence intending to confront him, but later returned following intervention by law enforcement agencies.
Some BNP and Jamaat activists have questioned how Mohiuddin is still able to remain active despite the current political situation and allegations against him. They have demanded his immediate arrest and called for an investigation into the source of his alleged influence.
Student Politics
Mohiuddin was reportedly active in Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, during his time at the University of Chittagong. He was seen participating in various rallies, meetings and other political programmers.
Because of his political activities, he allegedly faced confrontations with activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student organization associated with Jamaat-e-Islami. According to people familiar with the matter, he was allegedly harassed and physically assaulted on several occasions during his student years.
After returning to Bandarban, Mohiuddin remained active in Awami League politics for an extended period. His political opponents have accused him of acting as a close associate of the former ruling party and alleged that his activities posed a threat to them.
At the same time, Mohiuddin has claimed that he himself has been subjected to threats because of his affiliation with the Awami League.
'I Am Being Targeted for My Political Identity'
Speaking to journalists, Md. Mohiuddin said he was being targeted and facing threats to his life simply because of his involvement in Awami League politics.
He said he is currently moving from one place to another and staying away from his home for security reasons.
The allegations and counter-allegations have sparked renewed debate in Bandarban over the political activities and current whereabouts of the former Awami League leader.
Local BNP and Jamaat activists have demanded that the authorities take legal action against Mohiuddin if the allegations against him are found to be substantiated.
However, details regarding the two cases, including the case numbers, charges and their current legal status, should be verified through official police and court records before publication.
